How to Remove Wi-Fi Networks from Your Mac and iOS Device Posted on January 24th, 2018 by If you travel regularly with your Mac or iOS device, you likely find yourself connecting to new Wi-Fi networks: at airports, in train stations, in hotels, restaurants, pubs, or at clients' offices. Whether you connect to these networks with your Mac, iPhone or iPad, miraculously, your devices will remember these networks and sync them via iCloud — so your other Apple products can access them too, if you use. Your Apple device's ability to remember previously connected to networks can be both good and bad. While it means you don't have to search for or remember login credentials when you connect to a known Wi-Fi network on a different device, it can lead to a surfeit of Wi-Fi networks stored in your keychain and potentially allow you to unknowingly connect to a Wi-Fi network that might not be secure. You can cull these Wi-Fi networks, but only on a Mac. Read on and we'll show you how to remove these Wi-Fi networks so your Macs and iOS devices forget them. How to Remove Wi-Fi Networks from iPhone or iPad While you cannot remove individual Wi-Fi networks from an iOS device, there is a nuclear option. If you tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings, the iOS device deletes all your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, along with other network settings. However, this does not carry over to if you are using it, and the only way to fully delete these saved networks is on a Mac. How to View and Remove Saved Wi-Fi Networks via Network Preferences There are two ways you can view (and remove) saved Wi-Fi networks on a Mac. The first way is in the Mac's Network preferences. To do this, open System Preferences, and then click Network. Select Wi-Fi in the sidebar, and then click Advanced. In the Wi-Fi tab, you will see a list of networks. This list is mainly there so you can choose an order of preference for joining networks. You can drag the networks in the list so the preferred networks are at the top, but you can also delete networks by selecting it and then clicking the ‘ —‘ (minus) button. RELATED: When you do this, your iCloud Keychain will update, and they will be eventually removed from all your devices that sync to the same iCloud account. In some cases, you may not be able to remove Wi-Fi networks from the Network preferences, but you will be able to delete them from Keychain Access (see below for the second method to remove Wi-Fi networks). From the image above, note the checkbox in the pane that lets you 'Remember networks this computer has joined.' If you don't want a Wi-Fi network to be saved to your Mac, and subsequently to iCloud Keychain, uncheck this setting. How to View and Remove Saved Wi-Fi Networks via Keychain Access The second way to remove saved networks is via. This app is located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, and it stores passwords, certificates, encryption/decryption keys, secure notes and more. One of the items it stores as 'passwords' is the credentials you use to log into Wi-Fi networks; specifically, they are recorded as 'AirPort network password.' To find these, click the search box at the top right of your Keychain Access window and type 'AirPort.' You'll see a number of items, and the Kind column shows them as AirPort base station password, AirPort Disk password, and AirPort network password. (You may not have items in all three categories.) The latter are your Wi-Fi network credentials. Windows users have been able to auto-hide the taskbar since Windows 95, Mac users have not. Rebuild Office 2016 For Mac Database In Office 2011, a common way to fix this was to rebuild the Office 2011 database (also known as creating a new identity). However, Microsoft has removed this feature in Office 2016 for Mac claiming Office 2016 for Mac will only prompt you to rebuild the database if it encounters a problem but this doesn’t always work anyway and you risk losing all of your mail if it doesn’t repair properly: The way round this is to create a new Profile in Office 2016 for Mac instead (previously called an “Identity” in Office 2011). Note that if you use Microsoft Exchange, creating a new profile will delete any data that has not yet been synchronized with Exchange including contacts so it’s advisable to backup any local data in Outlook on your Mac. Here’s how to create a new identity in Office 2016 using El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra: • Open your Applications folder and find Microsoft Outlook • Hold down the CTRL key and then click on Microsoft Outlook to see the contextual menu and select “Show Package Contents” • In the Contents > SharedSupport folder, double-click on Outlook Profile Manager (which was previously called Database Utility in Office 2011). • In the Outlook Profile Manager window, click on the (+) button to give the new profile a name. • Finally, click the Options button and click Set as Default You can also try this for Office 2011 although it seems less likely to work regarding problems with El Capitan. In Outlook 2011, you simply hold down the Option key when launching Outlook to open the Database Utility to create a new Identity (now called “Profiles” in Office 2016). Outlook 2016 Crashes Sending Mail If you’re finding that Outlook 2016 is crashing or freezing every time you try to send mail or Outlook 2016 for Mac won’t send email, then the easiest solution is simply to create a second identical Outlook account and then delete the first one. Mainly on version 5.3 of LibreOffice for Windows, but I also tested it on the Mac,. The changes in macOS High Sierra are mostly under-the-hood tweaks which you might not see but you will benefit from. In conjunction with enhancements in Photos and Safari we think this is shaping up to be a really worthwhile macOS update. Anyone who’s been following all the drama and intrigue of office suite software development news for the past several years will know that LibreOffice has basically risen from the ashes of OpenOffice, as developers from the latter decided to go off to start their own project (while using the open-source code from the work they’d done on OpenOffice up to that point). For a while it looked like OpenOffice was doomed, with Apache announcing that their development team was dwindling and unable to keep up with updates addressing everything from UI improvements to security vulnerabilities. But after record-low download numbers in 2017, OpenOffice seems to have bounced back a bit, with a big update triggering people to take an interest again. In this article we compare the two Office suites to figure out which one wins. Related: Features Both OpenOffice and LibreOffice look much the same from the outset, with vintage-style interfaces that reject Microsoft’s tab-based look. Look a little closer, though, and you’ll see the differences. Handily, LibreOffice keeps track of your word and character account dynamically as you write, which is great for those working with word limits. (In OpenOffice you need to click “Tools -> Word Count.”) OpenOffice launches with a sidebar for various font and paragraph options, which is theoretically useful, except that many of the options are just repeats of what’s already in the toolbar across the top of the window. You can enable this sidebar in LibreOffice as well, but I think it’s a little superfluous. Font embedding is a nice addition in LibreOffice, too, which ensures that whatever fonts you use in your document get displayed correctly in other word processing software that opens the document. On a related note, LibreOffice allows you to save in the.docx format, while OpenOffice doesn’t. ![]() (Both let you save in the OpenDocument format and most of Microsoft’s proprietary formats.) Both LibreOffice and OpenOffice use open-source document formats and have exactly the same programs with exactly the same names contained therein. Namely: • Writer – word processing software • Calc – Spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel equivalent) • Impress – Presentation software (Microsoft Powerpoint) • Draw – A vector program () • Math – Mathematical formula software • Base – Database management software (Microsoft Access equivalent) In short, they look very similar, but LibreOffice has more quality-of-life features resulting from more consistent development of the software. Security and Stability LibreOffice gets updated much more than OpenOffice, thanks to a bigger team and more resources. A factor in this could also be that there’s a license in place, and that means the LibreOffice lot can help themselves to the code from OpenOffice but not the other way round. The rarity of updates with OpenOffice also means they’re not quite as on the ball in terms of security, and the team often take a long time to address the latest security vulnerabilities and bugs. A major bug in the macOS version that causes crashes when making diagrams in Calc is yet to be fixed, while Apache seems to be constantly scrambling to iron out security issues. I did a lot of processing and all these menus are really good. When I started writing this story, I thought it was going to be a rant. Instead it's more testimony to unnecessary hassle. Obviously, we're talking about Microsoft. Most of you know that a few years ago. Yep, there it is. That's the start of this story. I get downloadable Office from the school where I teach, but they only have Office 2011 for Mac. As you probably know,, and it's much more in line with the PC version of Office 2013 we're all used to. Office 2011 for Mac is so bad that I have a Parallels install of Windows on most of my Macs, just to run Office 2013 in a Windows virtual machine. Yesterday afternoon, I caved. I do a tremendous amount of work in Word and PowerPoint, and I just wanted them to run natively on my Macs. I wanted to use Office 2016 and stop all the weirdness that I have to go through when running a Windows instance to edit a Word file. Unfortunately, while the university has an Office 2011 for Mac license, they haven't yet updated to Office 2016 for Mac, which will probably be sometime this fall. So, at only $89 for the year (with a ten buck academic discount), I bought my own license. Clicking Done resulted in the installer launching Word, with a nice blue intro screen. Then came the sign in screen. I dutifully typed in my email address and then cut and pasted my password. A prompt showed up asking if I wanted to use my Office account or my company account. That was, admittedly, a bit baffling because I bought Office Home edition, but hey, I'm tough, I can handle it. After thinking on it a bit, I ascertained that the message came up because my email address is a custom domain, not something like @gmail.com or @live.com, etc. On a Windows 10 PC with a touchscreen, you might prefer the Office Mobile apps: pared-down versions optimized for touch; no keyboard or mouse required.
